Doctor Who LEGO to be released in December

Tuesday, 6 October 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The BBC have revealed details on the new Doctor Who LEGO® due to be released on 1st December 2015:

Construct a stunningly detailed LEGO® version of the iconic TARDIS and role-play the Doctor’s time-travel adventures!

Created by fan-designer Andrew Clark and selected by LEGO Ideas members, the set is based on the BBC’s popular and long-running television series about a Time Lord – the Doctor – exploring the universe in a blue police box. Due to trans-dimensional engineering, the TARDIS is bigger on the inside than the outside and this cool multifunctional set includes the console room that houses all the controls.

Featuring an opening TARDIS, detachable interior console room, exclusive graphic details and steps, fans can regenerate the Doctor and defeat the evil Daleks or Weeping Angels with the help of his extraordinary companion Clara. Once the doors of the TARDIS are closed, prepare to launch into dimensions light years away from Gallifrey!

Measuring over 5” (14cm) high, 6” (16cm) wide and 9” (23cm) deep, the model contains 623 pieces to build an authentic replica. At £49.99 RRP, the set (#21304) includes four minifigures: the Eleventh Doctor, the Twelfth Doctor, Clara Oswald and a Weeping Angel, plus 2 Daleks and assorted accessory elements such as the Doctor’s signature Sonic Screwdriver.

Doctor Who LEGO® will be released later this year

Wednesday, 4 February 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
BBC Worldwide and LEGO® have announced a deal to produce a range of Doctor Who Lego, based around a proposal made by fan Andrew Clark last year:

The 12th Doctor - Lego Concept (® 2015 The LEGO Group)Doctor Who and LEGO® fans around the world received exciting news today as The LEGO Group announced that it would be producing a LEGO Doctor Who set.

The concept for a Doctor Who set came from the LEGO® IDEAS website where fans can submit ideas for a set and vote for their favourite idea to be produced.

Doctor Who began in 1963 on BBC Television and is the world’s longest running sci-fi drama. Starring Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and Jenna Coleman as his companion, the hit BBC One show has become a global phenomenon with a loyal and passionate fan base.

The Doctor Who concept from fan Andrew Clark received the 10,000 votes requisite for The LEGO Group to consider it for production.

A licensing agreement between BBC Worldwide and The LEGO Group will see the new set available in all of The LEGO Group’s key markets before the end of the year.

Andrew’s winning design featured a range of Doctors, companions and monsters across the show’s history, but fans will have to wait until later this year to discover what will be produced.

Marcus Arthur, MD of BBC Worldwide UK said:
Both Doctor Who and LEGO enjoy a particularly close relationship with their fans and I can’t wait to see what LEGO produce.
Emma Owen, UK spokesperson for LEGO Ideas commented:
We’re extremely excited to announce that a Doctor Who and a WALL-E set will be released as our next LEGO Ideas fan based sets, congratulations to the designers Andrew Clark and Angus MacLane!

After receiving over 10,000 votes from the online community and having gone through rigorous toy testing from our expert panel, these awesome sets are on track to be on shelves later this year. The final set designs, pricing and availability are being worked out as we speak, so watch this space for the final details!

There is a Twitter hashtag associated with the announcement, #LEGODoctorWho

Second Doctor Who Lego proposal reaches review stage

Tuesday, 8 April 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
A second proposal for a Lego Doctor Who set has won support from the 10,000 people needed to take it on to the review stage.

In February, Andrew Clark put forward the following idea for a set entitled Doctor Who And Companions.

The iconic Tardis sits where it all began, Totter's Lane. The scene is a typical London street, with brick wall/fencing and lamppost with Totter's Lane sign. The Doctor and his companion stand outside with K-9 ready for adventures. The Tardis opens up to become the inner Tardis walls and can be placed next to the console where the Doctor controls their journey through time.

The set includes:

Tardis, exterior / interior walls.
(LEGO if you don't want to use the frame and "glass" part of my Tardis design that's ok)
Interior console (LEGO can choose if they want the full, console and tilt damage)
Street/Interior base.
K9 (18 parts)
1 Dalek red, or gray (25 parts) (assuming Lego can get the license)

Minifigs (most have dual printed face, happy and shocked)
1 and possibly 2 Doctors. An older and more recent Doctor, so older and younger fans have a Doctor.
For the more recent Doctor, I propose Tennant, or maybe Capaldi, who is the latest incarnation. For the other I propose the 4th Doctor Tom Baker, and possibly Sarah Jane as his companion. I am open for LEGO to choose the Doctor/s

2 Companions (Rose Tyler if Tennant is chosen, or Clara Oswald if Capaldi is chosen.

(Possibility of 1) Weeping Angel (Face printed on both sides)
(Possibility of 1) Cyberman
If LEGO likes the idea, a sound brick for the iconic Tardis sound.

Due to the nature of the set fans may buy 2 sets. One to have the Tardis on the street scene, and another to have the Tardis unfolded to become the inner walls placed next to console.

Total part count including Minifigs around 530 (less if just the top of the console is chosen)
More details were also put on his website.

In addition, Clark has uploaded a video to YouTube that shows his idea:

Now that Clark's proposal has gained the backing of 10,000 people, Lego has said the project will officially move from the idea stage to the review phase. In the following congratulatory statement, it wrote:
Old and new Doctor Who fans can now rejoice that this project has reached 10,000 supporters!

You've done a great job converting the adventures through time and space, which all started in that junkyard on Totter's Lane, into Lego form for fans everywhere to enjoy. This project includes a number of popular adversaries for the Doctor and his companions to contend with, but with K-9 and the sonic screwdriver, they don't stand a chance!

We now officially advance this project to the review phase.
It was announced in February that Lego was looking for Doctor Who-related proposals, and last month the first one to reach the all-important support of 10,000 people was announced.

As with the first idea to reach the 10,000 threshold, Clark's will now be examined by a Lego review board comprising designers, product managers and other key team members. Concept models will be built to help decide if it meets the required standards to become a Lego product, which will include factors such as safety and playability. The review will begin next month and end in September, and when it ends a "go/no go" decision will be made to develop and sell a product based on the concept.

Again, as with the earlier proposal, if it gets the green light it will then go into the development phase - billed by Lego as the longest one of the entire project - during which Lego model designers will refine the product and develop it for release. In addition, product materials such as the packaging and marketing will be created in preparation for a production run. Lego says that this particular phase "also takes several months".

Doctor Who Lego proposal moves forward

Sunday, 16 March 2014 - Reported by Josiah Rowe
As previously reported, in February Lego announced that it would begin accepting proposals for Doctor Who Lego sets. It took less than two weeks for one proposal to reach 10,000 supporters, which is the threshold for Lego's review team to consider a project. (This is apparently the third-fastest that any Cuusoo proposal has reached the 10,000 supporter mark.) The proposed Doctor Who set will be considered alongside any other projects which reach 10,000 supporters by the early May deadline. Other proposals which have already reached the review stage in the current period include an Apple store, the flying train from Back to the Future Part III, and a Lego bird project. These will be considered alongside the Doctor Who project for potential production as an official Lego set.

This was the official comment from Lego:
Congratulations on 10,000 supporters, GlenBricker and Kaminoan!

2014.03.13

Congratulations, GlenBricker and Kaminoan on reaching 10,000 supporters on LEGO CUUSOO!

You've presented a very nice TARDIS exterior and interior playset, and an assortment of characters from which to choose. We're looking forward to considering this project in the LEGO Review, but for now excuse us while we go make an electroshock device ... just in case this really IS a Nestene plot to take over the world via a toy factory!

We now officially advance this project to the Review phase.

What happens now?
This project moves from the Idea stage to the Review stage. A "LEGO Review Board" composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members will examine the idea. We'll build concept models and determine if the concept meets our high standards for what it takes to be a LEGO product. This includes factors such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand. Every potential LEGO product goes through a process like this and must meet the same standards.

The LEGO Review Begins in May
This project qualifies for the Second 2014 Review beginning in May and ending in September. For more information about the LEGO review process, see this knowledge base article.

The review is a thorough process and from its start, and can take several months. When finished, we make a "go/no go" decision to develop and sell a product based on the Doctor Who concept.

When the review is complete, we will inform you of our decision. If green-lit, this project goes into the longest phase of the project; the Development phase. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release, we create the product materials (box, instructions, marketing), and get everything ready for a production run. This also takes several months.

We will post follow-up information and our decision here.

Lego Doctor Who?

Wednesday, 26 February 2014 - Reported by Josiah Rowe
Many fans of Doctor Who and the Lego building toy sets have long wished for Doctor Who Lego toys. Now, a post on Lego's Cuusoo crowdsourcing design site suggests that Doctor Who Lego sets may be coming soon.

Lego Cuusoo is a crowdsourcing platform where people can submit and vote on designs for Lego toy sets. If a project receives 10,000 votes of support, it is considered by a Lego review board, which decides whether the project is suitable to be produced commercially. Previous sets which have made it through this process include sets based on the Mars Curiosity rover, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters (available this summer).

In the past, Lego Cuusoo proposals based on Doctor Who have been rejected due to conflict with Character Building's license to produce Doctor Who toys. Character has produced Lego-compatible Doctor Who building toys since 2011. It is not known whether Character's license has changed or expired, but today Lego posted the following on the Lego Cuusoo website:
Sometimes we have to turn down project submissions that refer to specific brands or licensed properties. We do this to avoid getting your hopes up for something we know we aren't able to make. In these cases, we already know the LEGO Group can't secure licensing rights to produce construction toys based on a particular brand or property, due to a conflicting interest with a third party.

If such a conflict goes away, we'll then be able to accept projects based on a particular brand or license.

...

Resolved Past Licensing Conflicts

We now welcome projects based on the following licenses that used to have conflicts:
  • Doctor Who - February 2014
Last updated February 25, 2014

This does not mean that Lego is definitely going to license and produce Doctor Who toys, but it does mean that they no longer consider it impossible.
