As if that wasn't enough, they also discover that, although Rome wasn't built in a day, it burnt down in considerably less time...

  1. Sphere of Freedom
  2. Cataclysm
  3. Food Fight

Christopher Eccleston said;

It was lovely coming back to play the role again, due to Nicholas's writing. I was surprised at how very quickly I seemed to recall the choices I made fifteen years ago. It was an odd experience; the Ninth Doctor's still hanging around.

Nicholas Briggs added:

It’s been an honour working with Chris again – it’s truly thrilling to hear him in studio, inhabiting the Ninth Doctor like he'd never been away! Writing and directing Doctor Who stories never gets old for me, and I’m so excited for people to hear what we’ve been up to.

It's been a delight to kick off The Ninth Doctor Adventures series with Chris, and I know that my fellow writers and directors are cooking up some great stuff for the next box set.”

Doctor Who fans worldwide can now pre-order all four volumes of The Ninth Doctor Adventures, which are available in three formats – collector’s edition CD, digital download or limited edition gatefold triple LP vinyl – exclusively from the Big Finish website.

Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures Series 10

Wednesday, 6 January 2021 - Reported by Marcus
Fourth Doctor - Series 10: Volume 2 (Credit: Big Finish)

The next Fourth Doctor audio release has been announced by Big Finish.

Tom Baker and Louise Jameson are plunging back into the Time Vortex for volume 2 of Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures due for release in February 2021.

These two brand-new full-cast audio dramas follow the Fourth Doctor and Leela into an uproarious tour through time and a prehistoric encounter with an esteemed palaeontologist.

Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures Series 10 Volume 2 is now available to pre-order as a collector's edition box set (on CD at £24.99) and as a digital download (at £19.99), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.

The volume consists of two rip-roaring rides, as follows:

Tribulations of Thadeus Nook by Andrew Smith

It’s time for the trip of a lifetime! Come along on one of Thadeus Nook’s Time Tours. See history as it really was. Get to witness wars and assassinations! See barbarian warlords right up close!

The Doctor and Leela encounter a most enterprising young gentleman – using time travel for his own financial gain. The Doctor is horrified at the irresponsibility – but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Because Thadeus Nook is about to learn that history is often best left in the past.

The Primeval Design by Helen Goldwyn

Dorset, 1830. The Doctor has taken Leela to meet Mary Anning, the noted palaeontologist, but the duo immediately stumble into trouble.

A body has been found in unusual circumstances. Attacked by an animal... but one of a size unknown in the area.

It turns out some things might be better off staying buried.

Taking on the role of the Doctor for his tenth year with Big Finish, Tom Baker said:

I so love doing all this, I never ever get tired. It’s as if each one is the very first one – and the more improbable it is the more I love it because I, of course, am totally improbable myself!

Series 10 Volume 2 is now available to pre-order as a collector's edition box set (on CD at £24.99) and as a digital download (at £19.99), exclusively at the Big Finish website.

Masterful from Big Finish

Saturday, 2 January 2021 - Reported by Marcus
Masterful (Credit: Big Finish)

To mark a half-century of the Master, Big Finish has created a special multi-disc release, in the form of Masterful. Eight incarnations of Doctor Who’s favourite other Time Lord unite!

Released today, exactly 50 years since Roger Delgado made his dastardly debut as the Master in Doctor Who: Terror of the Autons, the Masterful box set is a full-cast audio drama celebration of the malevolent Time Lord in all his glorious regenerations.

Masterful stars Geoffrey Beevers, Mark Gatiss, Michelle Gomez, Derek Jacobi, Alex MacQueen, Milo Parker, Eric Roberts and John Simm, featuring guest appearances from Jon Culshaw as Kamelion, Katy Manning as Jo Grant, with Abigail McKern, Aurora Burghart and Zaqi Ismail.

The Master's finally done it. He's won. He summons his other selves to a celebration of his ultimate victory. And they come from across time and dimensions. But he's forgotten to invite someone. And Missy's not happy.

Has the Master really conquered the universe? Or has something more awful been unleashed? Something that even all the Masters cannot stop?

Missy is determined to reveal the truth. Because one fact about the Master's existence never changes.

No-one can trust the Master. Not even the Master.

Masterful is now available as a limited edition 8-CD box set (priced at £44.99), or on download (at £39.99), exclusively at the Big Finish website.

This edition contains:

  • Discs 1-3: Masterful by James Goss
  • Disc 4: Masterful - Behind the Scenes
  • Disc 5: Doctor Who - Short Trips: I Am The Master by Geoffrey Beevers and Short Trips: The Switching by Simon Guerrier (both previously available on download only)
  • Discs 6-8: Doctor Who: Terror of the Master by Trevor Baxendale, a brand new, narrated audiobook featuring the Third Doctor, the Master and UNIT.

A standard edition of Masterful (featuring only the content of discs 1-3 above) is also available, priced at £24.99 (on CD) or £19.99 (as a download).

Please note the box set edition is limited to 3,000 copies only.

Describing his own memories of the Master, Mark Gatiss said:

I have profoundly scary memories of Terror of the Autons because it affected me forever, still does! I remember the Master being such a huge part of everything I loved about the show, and it just clicked so completely perfectly.

Alex Macqueen added:

I’m biased but the Master is frankly the most terrific character, so it’s totally right to have this commemoration. It’s a massive privilege and I love it because it’s an incredibly creative experience in the booth

Of the Masterful storyline, Geoffrey Beevers said:

It’s really different but it’s really good, because it explores who the Master might have been had he taken a different course in eternity. It’s beautifully written and it’s quite a challenge doing the transition into what that sort of person might have been – and back again – and what affect it has on him afterwards.

Eric Roberts added:

As a character in the story, it’s what we all should fear – all of our worst everythings, all of our worst wants, all of our worst behaviours and, for an actor, he’s just plain fun! How often do we get to play the extreme in evil?

Of the Master’s relationship to the Doctor, Michelle Gomez said:

Doctor Who couldn’t be Doctor Who without the Master. He gives the Doctor purpose in his plight for goodness, and the Master’s always there, shining a light on the Doctor’s dark side. The Doctor is a reluctant hero really, constantly being forced to be good because he can’t help himself but try and clean up the world of evil. The Master basically gives the Doctor work to do because he’s constantly in the background, undoing things and sabotaging goodness.

Milo Parker added:

All the other characters I’ve done in the past have been relatively well-behaved, so playing the Master is an opportunity for me to broaden my horizons, to try something new, and I’ve really enjoyed it.

Of playing the War Master, Derek Jacobi said:

He has a wonderfully wicked sense of humour which is lovely to indulge oneself in. The stories are very good, he usually comes out on top... heroic villains are the best things to play.

John Simm added:

He’s an iconic character – he’s the nemesis of the Doctor, the evil Doctor, the baddie Doctor Who. He thinks he’s the equal to the Doctor; he’s a Time Lord, he’s everything the Doctor is, but evil. It’s a real honour to play him.

The War Master: Hearts of Darkness

Wednesday, 28 October 2020 - Reported by Marcus
Hearts of Darkness (Credit: Big Finish)
It’s a tale of two Time Lords in a swashbuckling new box set of full-cast audio dramas from Big Finish Productions as The War Master: Hearts of Darkness is released today.

This single epic adventure told across four hour-long episodes sees Sir Derek Jacobi reprise the role of the Master first seen on screen in the 2007 Doctor Who story, Utopia.

In The War Master: Hearts of Darkness, he is pitted once again against Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, in a quest to take down his mortal enemy, and take over the universe.

Joining the crew of rogue pilots and mercenary pirates on this perilous mission are actors Colin McFarlane (The Dark Knight), Tanya Moodie (Motherland), George Fletcher (EastEnders), Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo (Devs), and Sandra Huggett (Casualty).

Plus, there’s the return of fan-favourite, Narvin, played once again by Séan Carlsen.

The War Master: Hearts of Darkness is available now at £24.99 for the collector's edition CD box set or £19.99 for the digital download, at www.bigfinish.com.

Find the Doctor... stop the Doctor... and, if necessary, kill the Doctor!”

Recruited by the Celestial Intervention Agency to track down his oldest enemy, the Master finds himself thrown into a mission that will take him into deepest Dalek territory.

Abandoned on the planet Redemption, he assembles a crew and acquires a ship –the journey that follows is certain to test them all... and not everyone will survive.

But space pirates and living corpses are the least of their worries. Their biggest threat remains at large: a Time Lord who likes to call himself ‘the Doctor’.
Hearts of Darkness: Paul McGann, Lisa McMullin, Amanda Shodeko, Colin McFarlane, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Henry Nott, Derek Jacobi, Scott Handcock, Toby Hrycek-Robinson (Credit: Big Finish)
Producer Scott Handcock said:
I love these box sets. There’s something fascinating about stories that focus on anti-heroes and villains. Creatively it is more challenging because you have to find an angle that makes the audience engage with the Master –and sort of root for him –even when he’s doing the most despicable things! “It’s a nice examination of what makes the Master and the Doctor the people they are, and the unique relationship that ties them together. We veer from futuristic cities to spaceships, gothic castles to jungle planets. Each of the four episodes feels different tonally –we go from heist film to action movie, then Universal horror to race-against-time thriller. It moves along at a fair old lick

Actor Derek Jacobi said:
It’s been great! It’s a very complicated plotline so I’ve found it interesting and fascinating. Baddies are the best parts. The Master and the Doctor are two halves of the same coin really –like Jekyll and Hyde.

The War Master: Hearts of Darkness is available now at £24.99 for the collector's edition CD box set or £19.99 for the digital download, exclusively from the Big Finish website. Big Finish listeners can save money by ordering a bundle of volumes in The War Master range from as little as £39.

The character, played by Michelle Ryan, was last seen on television in the 2009’s Easter Special episode of Doctor Who, Planet of the Dead,

Lady Christina series 2 comprises three new stories, as the jetsetting action heroine travels to a land down under, discovers historical treasures and grapples with difficult family decisions.

Actor Michelle Ryan said:
Lady Christina is someone who's very capable and independent. Like a cat, she does have nine lives, I really think. People seem to really respond to her.

It's so great to put her boots back on, and get back in the studio and have a little play. Everyone's bringing their A-game. The writing's really good. I've really had a brilliant time.

Lady Christina 2 is now available to pre-order as a collector’s edition box set or download, from just £16.99, exclusively at www.bigfinish.com.
Jetsetter, adventurer, and owner of a very unusual London bus, Lady Christina de Souza is travelling the globe and catching up with the rellies.

But Sam Bishop and Jacqui McGee of UNIT are on her trail. As one reunion takes a dangerous turn, Christina has a hard decision to make –for the good of the family!

The three new tales in this series are:
  • The Wreck by James Goss
  • Walkabout by Sarah Grochala
  • Long Shot by John Dorney

Director Helen Goldwyn said:
These scripts and these characters are fantastic; really capturing the spirit of the first series but also adding new twists and dimensions. These new stories also do real justice to the multi-layered character of Lady Christina. There’s so much comedy but then there’s also lots of dark, gruesome moments!
The series also features guest appearances from Warren Brown (Luther, Good Cop), Tracy Wiles (Intrigo: Samaria) and William Gaminara (Silent Witness).

Doctor Who – Short Trips: The Meaning of Red

Tuesday, 6 October 2020 - Reported by Marcus
Short Trips: The Meaning of Red (Credit: Big Finish)

This month's Short Trip Audio release from Big Finish, The Meaning of Red, is performed by Nicola Bryant

All alone on a desolate, alien world, Peri Brown must fight for survival on her own. Can she succeed without the Doctor’s help?

Available as a download only, Doctor Who –Short Trips: The Meaning of Red Is the debut Big Finish audio adventure by writer Rod Brown.

It is a story that explores friendship, survival and self-discovery. Nicola Bryant reprises the role of Peri, a companion to the Fifth Doctor (as originally seen on television in 1984); this time showing how she takes matters into her own hands when the Time Lord isn’t present.
Doctor Who –Short Trips: TheMeaning of Redis now available to download exclusively from the Big Finish website for just £2.99

The TARDIS accidentally strands Peri alone on the inhospitable world of Calleto. Taking refuge with the planet’s only colonists, she waits and waits, but the Doctor doesn’t return. Her only hope lies in discovering the secrets of this planet.

It’s that, or she dies.

Doctor Who –Short Trips are short stories, many written by some of Doctor Who’s most popular authors from the worlds of television, print, comics and audio, and read by a host of favourite Big Finish actors.

Writer Rod Brown said:

The Doctor has been my best friend and companion since I was aged two; I was therefore so grateful for the opportunity to write for Peri and the Fifth Doctor. Peri had grown significantly between her two TV appearances with Peter Davison; from the somewhat rebellious hothead in Planet of Fire to the more mature and sympathetic character we saw on Androzani Minor.I thought it would be interesting to explore the reasons why and how she had grown up during this period –hence her predicament in The Meaning of Red.

Producer Alfie Shaw said:

The Meaning of Red takes a post-2005 Doctor Who television series staple (the ‘Doctor Lite’ episode) and applies it to a classic TARDIS team. Rod's done a fantastic job of highlighting the strengths of Peri as a character. Even though she's separated from the Doctor, we see all the traits that make her a perfect match for him. Nicola's a fantastic reader and has brought the whole thing to life wonderfully.

Doctor Who –Short Trips: The Meaning of Redis now available to download exclusively from the Big Finish website for just £2.99.
