Whoniverse Australia Cancelled

Wednesday, 26 February 2014 - Reported by Marcus
A Town Called Mercy. Photo: BBCThe Hub productions Whoniverse event has been cancelled following the withdrawal of Matt Smith from the event for family reasons.

The convention was due to hit the four main Australia cities over the next two weeks, bringing together the original Eleventh Doctor team of Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill. Although Gillan pulled out of part of the tour last week, the absence of Matt Smith has proved a fatal blow with the organisers having no choice but to cancel the event.

Matt Smith is unable to leave the UK at present due to a family matter. He gave the convention organisers the following statement.
I am deeply saddened to have to advise that I will not be able to come to Australia for the Hub Productions' Whoniverse event. Although I wish it were otherwise, due to a personal family emergency it's not possible for me to leave England at this time. I truly regret the situation, and the disappointment it must be causing, but I'm hoping to be able to reschedule as soon as possible for the future; I look forward to see you all then.
The organisers have said they are working to try to bring the team to future events, but in the meantime, Ticketek will be in touch regarding refunds.

Lego Doctor Who?

Wednesday, 26 February 2014 - Reported by Josiah Rowe
Many fans of Doctor Who and the Lego building toy sets have long wished for Doctor Who Lego toys. Now, a post on Lego's Cuusoo crowdsourcing design site suggests that Doctor Who Lego sets may be coming soon.

Lego Cuusoo is a crowdsourcing platform where people can submit and vote on designs for Lego toy sets. If a project receives 10,000 votes of support, it is considered by a Lego review board, which decides whether the project is suitable to be produced commercially. Previous sets which have made it through this process include sets based on the Mars Curiosity rover, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters (available this summer).

In the past, Lego Cuusoo proposals based on Doctor Who have been rejected due to conflict with Character Building's license to produce Doctor Who toys. Character has produced Lego-compatible Doctor Who building toys since 2011. It is not known whether Character's license has changed or expired, but today Lego posted the following on the Lego Cuusoo website:
Sometimes we have to turn down project submissions that refer to specific brands or licensed properties. We do this to avoid getting your hopes up for something we know we aren't able to make. In these cases, we already know the LEGO Group can't secure licensing rights to produce construction toys based on a particular brand or property, due to a conflicting interest with a third party.

If such a conflict goes away, we'll then be able to accept projects based on a particular brand or license.

...

Resolved Past Licensing Conflicts

We now welcome projects based on the following licenses that used to have conflicts:
  • Doctor Who - February 2014
Last updated February 25, 2014

This does not mean that Lego is definitely going to license and produce Doctor Who toys, but it does mean that they no longer consider it impossible.

As a lifetime follower of the show, I'm delighted to see its global success. And I'm looking forward to sharing with the world the very exciting journey the new series is taking us on.

Samuel Anderson joins Doctor Who Series 8

Monday, 24 February 2014 - Reported by Connor Johnston
Danny Pink, played by Samuel Anderson (Credit: BBC/Adrian Rogers)The BBC have announced that Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) is set to join the cast of Doctor Who as a recurring character in Series 8, which will also introduce Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor.

It's also been confirmed Anderson's character, named Danny Pink, also teaches at Coal Hill High School, where current companion Clara Oswald and original companions of the First Doctor; Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton were employed.

On joining the show Samuel Anderson said:
I was so excited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started!
He continued:
It's a quintessential part of British culture and I can't believe I'm part of it. It's an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can't wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, added:

For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it's the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi's first series of Doctor Who!

Moments in Time: The first Radio Times cover

Saturday, 22 February 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
Moments in TimeThe latest in our ongoing feature centring on significant Doctor Who occasions sees the show accorded a very special publishing honour - but just like the programme itself, it wasn't without wrangles before and after . . .

In the run-up to Doctor Who starting, hopes had been high that the first episode would be given a prestigious publicity boost by the BBC's much-respected listings magazine Radio Times in the form of a cover feature. This was, after all, a show like no other: it was innovative and ground-breaking, with skills, experimentation and imagination pushed further than ever.

However, it was not to be. After initial interest, the magazine had a change of heart at the last minute, falsely believing that the corporation itself didn't have much faith in the programme, and despite protestations by head of serials Donald Wilson editor Douglas Williams ditched the idea, although the show was granted a mention on the relevant cover and an article was included that gave a taster of what adventures might lie ahead - with one of them being the possibility of a journey "to far Cathay in the caravan of Marco Polo."

And it would be that very journey that would see Radio Times finally give in and award the much-coveted prime spot on its cover to Doctor Who - in all probability helped by the fact that with the arrival of the Daleks a few weeks previously, the show had rapidly seared itself into the national consciousness.

With The Roof of the World going out on 22nd February 1964, the cover of the corresponding week's Radio Times - number 2102, volume 162 - depicted lead actor William Hartnell with guest stars Mark Eden as Marco Polo and Derren Nesbitt as Tegana. It was accompanied by an unbylined feature on page 7 that set the historical scene after a brief recap of the previous two adventures. (It should be noted that back then Radio Times also printed its publication date at the top of the pages, hence the references to "February 20, 1964".)

Although the feature's picture included all the companions, the fact that the three actors hadn't appeared on the cover with Hartnell caused some upset. The day after the broadcast of The Roof of the World, William Russell, who played Ian Chesterton, contacted his agent, T Plunkett Green, with a number of concerns relating to the programme as a whole, one of them being the fact that the co-stars had been bumped in favour of the guest stars on the cover of the listings magazine. This grievance would be relayed to Wilson, who subsequently apologised to the agent, saying it had been "confidently expected" by the production team that one of the photos including all the regulars taken at the photocall would be used as a cover image. Wilson assured Plunkett Green that he would complain about it to the magazine.

From a somewhat hesitant start, Doctor Who and Radio Times would, over the years, continue to have something of a love-hate relationship, ranging from the highs of the stunning artwork by Frank Bellamy gracing its pages during the early-to-mid-1970s, as well as special editions, to the lows of the Tom Baker era when it would merit few articles and no covers at all, back to the embarrassment of riches we have in terms of coverage in the 21st century. Today, though, on the 50th anniversary of the broadcast of the opening episode of the seven-part epic - ironically, the earliest Doctor Who story to be missing from the archives - we mark an auspicious event in that relationship between programme and publisher with Doctor Who's first Radio Times cover . . .

A new art portrait of Tom Baker has been released to celebrate the actor's 80th Birthday.

The print, by photographer Oliver McNeil, is for sale as a high quality art print. It joins the range of exclusive portraits of the man who played the fourth Doctor.

Each one is approximately 18 inches by 12 inches and can be purchased framed or unframed in the UK and unframed in the rest of the world. They will be autographed personally by Tom Baker who will personalise each piece of work on request.

Full details from Legend Photography

Tom Baker will be at the Stamp Centre in London in order to meet fans and sign autographs on Thursday 20th March 2014. On Saturday 29th March 2014, he will be at the London Film Memorabilia Convention at Central Hall, Westminster, where he will also meet fans and sign autographs.

Colin Baker is to appear in a new drama, Finding Richard, based on the discovery of the bones of King Richard III in a car park in Leicester in 2012

Baker will play the grandad of a boy who starts his own quest when he hears the story of the recovery. The short film, to be shot on location in Leicestershire, has been co-written by director Rhys Davies and producer Doug Cubin. It is due to be submitted to Cannes Film Festival in early March.

Baker told the Leicester Mercury
I am excited about taking part in this project. I receive many scripts from successful or aspiring filmmakers and am rarely able to participate, unfortunately. However, I'll make no bones about it, when I read Finding Richard, I knew I had to try to find time to play grandad. It's an impressive, gentle and sensitive script, so I have managed to squeeze the time between trips to the USA and New Zealand and am looking forward to joining the team in Leicester.

David Tennant has been filming Gracepoint, the US version of the ITV drama Broadchurch.

The FOX adaptation is being filmed in and around Victoria, Canada, with Tennant playing Emmett Carver, based on the character of Scottish DI Alec Hardy in the UK version of the drama. Filming is taking place in Sidney, Island View Beach and Brentwood Bay.

The 10 episodes will be filmed around the area for approximately four months. A number of pictures are available on Flikr.

Matt Smith sends message to young fan

Wednesday, 19 February 2014 - Reported by Marcus

Matt Smith has sent a personal video message to a four-year-old fan recently diagnosed with a serious illness.

The News, Portsmouth reports that Jack Robinson, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last month, received a video message from the actor, who is currently in Austin, Texas.

Since he was diagnosed, Jack's family have been trying to make the boy's dreams come true. When singer-songwriter Gary Barlow heard about their challenge he arranged for the actor to record the video message.

Terry Robinson, Jack's dad, said:
Jack was over the moon. Gary Barlow tweeted he had a message from Matt Smith, but we didn't expect this, thank you Gary. And thank you to Darren Langford, a well-wisher, who said he had also been in contact with Matt. Not sure which person he responded too, but we are grateful that he has.

Jack had gone to sleep, but we woke him up to show him the message. His eyes just lit up and he was so delighted. It has made his day.
