No Beatles outside Europe

Thursday, 11 March 2010 - Reported by Marcus
It has been revealed that the short clip of The Beatles, featured in episode one of The Chase, will only be included on the Region 2 DVD's and will be removed from the masters of the discs produced for regions outside Europe.

The short clip of the group playing Ticket to Ride, was taken from the BBC's Top of the Pops programme, and features as part of the sequence where the TARDIS crew look at various events from history on the Time-Space Visualiser.

The music is covered by a blanket agreement for use in the UK but this does not apply to the rest of the world. It may have been possible for the same masters to have been used for the international copies, as there is nothing in the BBC paperwork to indicate that the clip of the Beatles exists in the story. However the distributors have received so many queries about the inclusion of the clip that it became impossible to ignore its presence, so it has been removed from the edit.

In other DVD news, online retailers in the States are reporting the Region 1 DVD release of the animated story Dreamland has been pushed back to October.

Doctor Who available early on ABC's iView

Wednesday, 10 March 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
ABC Television in Australia have announced that the new series of Doctor Who is to be made available on their online iView service, a couple of days before broadcast on television. Director of Television Kim Dalton said:
iView is an additional way for Australian audiences to watch ABC TV's content generally after, but in this special case before, its television broadcast. We hope the lure of Doctor Who will provide incentive for more viewers to discover iView.
Previous series of Doctor Who were available on the iview service, becoming its highest rated programme last year with some 378000 views between April and December. TV Tonight blog reports The Eleventh Hour will make its Australian debut on the ABC on Sunday 18 April 2010 on ABC1 at 7.30pm. It will be available on the iview service from 12am on Saturday 17 April 2010.

Meanwhile, in the UK the BBC's iplayer service still proves very popular, with figures for January showing some 68.2m viewers catching up on television. The 10th Doctor finale The End Of Time Part Two was the second most-watched programme with 831000 requests, with Top Gear performing best overall with some 1.1m requests for its final episode of the current series.

Doctor on Tour

Monday, 8 March 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The BBC have issued a press release reporting that in the run-up to Doctor Who airing at Easter there will be a national tour featuring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan. The two stars will travel to five locations in a specially themed Doctor Who bus, and each venue will also feature a regional premiere of the first episode, The Eleventh Hour.

The tour has been arranged in association with BBC Outreach, whose remit is to take the BBC into specific communities and sections of society, and the focus here is to reach relatively under-served communities by the BBC.

The bus will be at the following places on tour:
29th March, Belfast
30th March (am), Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, (Karen Gillan's home town!)
30th March (pm), Sunderland
31st March (am), Salford
31st March (pm), Northampton (Matt Smith's home town!)

There will also be three big screen showings at selected BBC locations in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Plymouth and Swansea; these will take place between the 1st and 3rd April.

The events will feature exclusive footage – including the chance to see the Doctor Who trailer in 3D – and giveaways, and fans can also get their photo taken tumbling through the giant vortex. Visitors will also be able to meet monsters.

Says Executive Producer Piers Wenger:
"This is a great opportunity for the new Doctor and his Companion to interface directly with the people who matter most to Doctor Who: the fans. The chance to visit them in their hometowns will ensure that the 11th Doctor's maiden voyage is an utterly magical one.

Filming Roundup 5th March

Friday, 5 March 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
This week saw filming taking place for the seventh and last block of the new series, for episodes 7 and 11. The beginning of the week saw the crew out in a village near St. Athan, whilst the latter half has been spent back on the streets and parks of Cardiff.

Filming on the 1st saw the TARDIS parked up outside a house; scenes witnessed included a number of elderly people seen to carry items into the house, and the Doctor attempting to access it through a window. Amy was said to be held inside.

Filming over the course of these two days have involved the Doctor staying at a house as a lodger with characters played by guest stars James Corden and Daisy Haggard.

Thursday concentrated on scenes at their house (filmed on Westville Road, Cardiff), with scenes of running from the house, some football antics between Matt Smith and James Corden during the day, and in the evening with the Doctor examining 'junk' (believed to be components for the 'alternative' TARDIS console as designed from the Blue Peter competition).

Friday, on the other hand, involved the Doctor engaged in a game of football at Victoria Park in Cardiff; Paul Mount and Ryan Farrell report:
Paul: Matt Smith and James Corden, in football rig, are, with a full team, playing football. The Doctor's clearly very good at this and he scores a spectacular goal. The rest of the team go nuts. The 'crowd' (ie about six onlookers!) chant "Doc-tor! Doc-tor!" as he scores. the triumphant Doctor runs around, shouting, alternately "I love this game!" or "What a game!"

Ryan: The Doctor's team won! They all pick him up and he says "please, you're too kind. I feel like the emperor!". They've moved and now Matt has his tweed coat over his kit. Greenscreen being set up. Confidential are here too. Matt was having a right laugh! He went right up to the camera and said something like "Matt Smith. The Doctor. Defender". He seems to be getting on with James Corden off camera. By the way, Matt knows what he's doing because he originally aspired to be a professional footballer before he had an accident. He played for Leicester under 21s I think. I'd say this scene was written with Matt in mind.

Later, a scene was filmed of the Doctor exiting the TARDIS (believed to take place at the start of the adventure).

2|entertain's future secured

Friday, 5 March 2010 - Reported by Chuck Foster
BBC Worldwide have announced that they now fully own DVD distributor 2|entertain, the company closely associated with the release of Doctor Who DVDs over the last six years. The fate of the company has been uncertain since BBC Worldwide's partner Woolworth went into administration back in 2008.

John Smith, CEO, BBC Worldwide, said:
I am pleased that we have finally concluded these negotiations, and have secured the future of 2|entertain. This comes as good news for a variety of stakeholders. 2|entertain's retail partners know it is now backed by a stable owner. Consumers can continue to enjoy BBC content on DVD in their own homes. The independent production sector already works closely with 2|entertain. And licence fee payers will continue to benefit from 2|entertain's contribution to BBC Worldwide, which helped us return a total of £153m to the BBC in the last financial year.
Paul Dempsey, CEO of 2|entertain and Managing Director, BBC Worldwide Home Entertainment, added:
The 2|entertain business has not been distracted by the events of the past 18 months, continuing to deliver impressive results. Under full BBC Worldwide ownership, it now looks forward to a more settled period and playing an important role in BBC Worldwide’s future plans.
