Peter Capaldi discusses future

Wednesday, 9 March 2016 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Peter Capaldi on Steve Wright in the Afternoon (Credit: BBC)Peter Capaldi appeared on a number of programmes yesterday to promote the release of Doctor Who: The Complete Ninth Series on DVD, Blu-ray, and through the BBC Store, during which he also discussed his present and potential future involvement with the show.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's The Janice Forsyth Show, he discussed his thoughts on continuing to play the Doctor when the show's next lead writer Chris Chibnall takes over with presenter Edi Stark:
I haven't made my mind up. I've been asked to stay on, which is lovely, and I think Chris Chibnall's fantastic and a wonderful choice. To be perfectly honest, it's so far away in the future, and I don't - you know, Doctor Who is a very difficult thing to say goodbye to, and I don't want to make that decision right now. I don't know yet - they've asked me to stay on, so when I am forced to make that decision I will make it.
Speaking on BBC Radio Two's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, he said:
I love being Doctor Who, so I will be around as it's right to be around.

Meanwhile, the next series, which definitely continues his adventures with the Doctor, will begin filming soon; when asked on ITV's Lorraine show, he responded:
It's going to start very soon. For some reason I'm not allowed to tell you, because Doctor Who is veiled in secrecy always!

The new series will also feature the new companion, with Peter telling Steve Wright:
It's sad when Jenna was on the show before I arrived so she was my welcome to the show and she introduced me to it, and told me where to go and where to get my corned beef and where to sit and all that stuff, and she was absolutely lovely so I'll miss her very much. We're going to have a new companion, because we're just obviously about to start filming the new season - it's going to be someone very different who will be announced shortly. I really can't say who that is, but the whole dynamic is going to be very different - but that's good too, you know, it's a different character.

Radio Times has reported that, in addition to his usual duties in Doctor Who, Capaldi may also make a guest appearance in spin-off series Class, which is due to commence filming in April.

Peter Capaldi in The Complete Shakespeare Walk

Thursday, 18 February 2016 - Reported by Marcus
Peter Capaldi is to feature in a special series of films marking 400 years since the playwright's William Shakespeare's death.

The Complete Walk has been organised by Shakespeare's Globe, the theatre complex based on London's southbank and the location of the 2007 Doctor Who story The Shakespeare Code. The Walk, held over the spring weekend of 23 – 24 April, will feature a series on short films, shown on 37 screens, along a 2.5 mile route on the Thames embankment between Westminster and Tower Bridge.

Other films include Cleopatra in front of the Pyramids, Shylock in Venice’s Jewish ghetto, Hamlet on the rocks of Elsinore, Henry VIII at Hampton Court Palace and Richard II in Westminster Hall.

Other Doctor Who alumni taking part include Lindsay Duncan in All's Well That Ends Well, filmed in Roussillon; and Meera Syal as Lucetta in The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

After appearing in London, the project will be presented in cities across the UK and internationally, after which the films will be accessible on Globe Player.

Doctors Supporting Doctors

Wednesday, 10 February 2016 - Reported by Marcus
Peter Capaldi in Dame Vivienne Westwood designed Support Junior Doctors tshirt (Credit: Sarah Sheldrake)Peter Capaldi and Sir John Hurt have both lent their support to the #WearYourNHS campaign, set up to raise awareness of the issues and challenges facing the NHS at present.

The actors are pictured wearing a 'Support Junior Doctors' tshirt, designed by fashion icon Dame Vivienne Westwood. The #WearYourNHS Campaign, spearheaded by Dr Lauren Gavaghan, a Senior Registrar in Psychiatry in London, was started as a means to open up the issue of the Junior Doctors Contract negotiations to the public.

Junior Doctors, working for the NHS in England, have today been taking part in their second one day strike, in protest at changes proposed to their contracts by the Government. The management insist the changes are needed to provide a seven day health service in the future. The Junior Doctors are worried that the changes will spread overworked staff even more thinly and jeopardize patient health.

The #WearYourNHS campaign is a play on the words We Are Your NHS. Gavaghan wanted to encourage people to start thinking about the NHS as they might a shirt worn on their backs, something they may take for granted and only miss if it were gone one day.

This latest stage of the campaign sees Capaldi taking part in a session with photographer Sarah Sheldrake. The pictures show THE Dr and 20 ‘Junior’ Doctors, all from a range of medical specialities including A&E/Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatric Anaesthetics, GP, Rheumatology, Acute General Medicine, Intensive Care, and Psychiatry, some senior in their specialities.

On why he was supporting Junior Doctors, Capaldi just said
It’s a Matter of Trust
The Twelfth Doctor was joined by the War Doctor in the photoshoot, with veteran actor Sir John Hurt taking part. Hurt was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015, and is now doing well following treatment. On why he chose to support Junior Doctors he said
The most important thing is that they (doctors) are not to be mistrusted. They do not do this for fun. (go on strike). It is about medicine. Medicine shouldn’t be anything to do with politics at all. Politics should be bending over backwards to support medicine.
Speaking as to why she organised the campaign, Dr Lauren Gavaghan said
The photoshoot with Peter Capaldi and 20 Junior Doctors was to highlight some of our struggles. We feel as though we are up against a well-oiled propaganda machine, and that much of the time we are silenced, gagged and prevented from speaking in more than mere sound bites.

The photographs also illustrate something of what it is like to be silenced, to be gagged, with some of the doctors seen wearing surgical masks to demonstrate this point. Some have their hands tied with stethoscopes, in an effort to show the pain involved in feeling as though ones hands are literally tied, whilst the government continues to peddle lies.

The Husbands of River Song: press interviews

Thursday, 10 December 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The Husbands of River Song (Credit: BBC/Simon Ridgway)The BBC have released interviews with Peter Capaldi, Alex Kingston and Steven Moffat to promote the forthcoming Christmas special, The Husbands of River Song.

What can you tell us about the Doctor Who Christmas special this year?
Well the Christmas special is very Christmassy, which I’m sure everyone will be relieved to hear. It finds the Doctor in a Dickensian kind of world, in a Christmas card sort of world which he’s been brought to in order to do a favour for a king. So there’s quite a festive spirit to the episode. But the favour is more complex and isn’t exclusively for the benefit of the king, but more for the benefit of the king’s consort.

What is your favourite scene from this episode?
I have lots of favourite scenes from the Christmas episode, but I think being met by Matt Lucas on a wonderful wintery Dickensian street with the TARDIS covered in snow was delightful, because it was like a Doctor Who Christmas card. Matt is such a fabulously funny person to have around, so I loved that!

Do you like filming Christmas episodes?
Yes I do like them - last year’s was a bit scarier than this one, this is more openly festive. I like the idea of ghost stories at Christmas and frightening things seem to work rather well in the festive environment.

Would you like to see River Song return?
Yes of course, because Alex is fabulous and it’s always lovely to work with her.

Who is Nardole?
The character of Nardole is played by Matt Lucas so you can expect a lot of laughs and pathos. He is, as ever, a hugely loveable personality, a little naïve, a little out of his depth and quite cosmic.
What was it like to come back?
I was quite surprised when I was asked to come back, but I was happy to because I just thought it would be great fun. It’s such a great character, she’s become so beloved by lots of fans and I’ve had them saying it would be so great for her to come back and to see her interacting with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. I was actually thrilled when Steven decided he wanted to explore that too.

What did you think of the script?
It’s a wonderful slapstick caper. There’s a lot of great laughs, there’s a lot of fabulous River one-liners. The fans are going to love the things she says and there’s a lot of play. They’re also fighting a very interesting alien played by Greg Davies. It’s a really great episode and Steven has done my character proud.

Has this episode been challenging?
I’ve been really lucky in this episode as River gets to do an awful lot. She gets to run around in snow, I’ve been flying and have done harness work against a green screen. She’s got quite a few husbands in this episode and there’s a lot of fabulous quick-fire dialogue between her and the Doctor. She gets to snog the most handsome man in the work, his character name is Ramone. It’s all going on!

What were your favourite moments during filming?
The favourite moment so far for me was stepping back on to the TARDIS, because the interior of it has changed yet again. I’ve been on two different TARDIS incarnations, and to walk into this one and know it’s a familiar space but at the same time it’s different, was great. I love this one - everything works which is really fun, I stand there pressing all the buttons, it’s great!
Can you give us an introduction to the episode you’ve written this year?
The Doctor is an all new man and has been for a while. It may have slipped his mind that out there, in a very tangled and complicated way, is his wife that has never seen this face before and doesn’t even know about this incarnation. We’re about to stand with the Doctor and see what River is like when she doesn’t know he’s looking. We’re about to see what River thinks of Matt Smith turning into Peter Capaldi.

What made you want to write this episode?
River Song meets the Capaldi Doctor, that’s got to be fun - I’d like to write that. That’s what made me want to write. I knew it had to be a big romp for Christmas day and there’s nothing like River Song to make that evident - River brings a whole storm of camp glamour to it.

Is it any different writing a Christmas episode of Doctor Who?
Yes, you need to have a bit of Christmas in it, but that’s never felt to me like a tremendous impediment, it’s a hook to hang it on. Sometimes we go very Christmassy - ‘A Christmas Carol’ was incredibly Christmassy, so was ‘The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe’ and ‘The Snowmen’ had the appearance of Christmas without being very Christmassy. Last Christmas is actually the least Christmassy episode we’ve ever done, except for the fact it actually had Santa Claus in it - I rather loved last Christmas. This year’s episode starts Christmassy and has a comedy romp!

Do you enjoy writing a Christmas episode?
I like Christmas specials - I know some people don’t. Some friends of mine don’t like Christmas specials very much and they’re always complaining about all the tinsel, the goodwill and the twinkly stars, and the lovely snow on the rooftops. I love all that, I love Christmas as a day and as a festival. I love that it’s dark, twinkly and rich red, all those things I adore so it’s no hardship for me at all.

Who is King Hydroflax?
King Hydroflax is a very bad King, who as it turns out is mostly cyborg - in fact only his head has remained. He’s a vicious, terrible and deeply stupid man and a dreadful tyrant.
