Lethbridge-Stewart: The Cruel Oil

Monday, 11 September 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Lethbridge-Stewart: The Cruel Oil (Credit: Candy Jar Books)Candy Jar Books has announces its latest pdf-only short story, The Cruel Oil by Harry Draper. This can be downloaded for free from the Candy Jar website.

Range Editor Andy Frankham-Allen introduces the story:
The Cruel Oil is a result of our recent short story open submission window. It was a simple but intruiging pitch; When disaster occurs at a North Sea platform, and dead bodies preserved in tar from the spillage begin to disappear from their morgues, Lethbridge-Stewart and Anne Travers discover just how cruel the oil of Earth can be... Upon reading the full outline I just knew it contained a ‘classic era’ feel, and would be better suited to Anne Travers and Bill Bishop. Which led me to another idea...
Twenty year old Harry Draper is one of the youngest authors to write for the Lethbridge-Stewart range. Originally from Bristol, he nows lives in Ormskirk, west Lancashire, and explains a little of his long-standing desire to write some Doctor Who related material:
Just over ten years ago, I read my first Doctor Who book in my local Waterstones. Naturally, having failed to grow up all this time later, I leapt at the opportunity to submit a pitch to the Lethbridge-Stewart short story opportunity. When Andy suggested the idea of depicting Anne Travers and Bill Bishop's first date, and Anne coming to terms with her father's death, I knew then we had a story worth telling. Now, at long last, it has materialised! And no one is safe from the Silhouettes. Here's to never quite growing up.
The Cruel Oil is set shortly before the novel The Dreamer’s Lament, released last month.

  • It is also possible to order a preview copy of the new Lethbridge-Stewart spin-off, The Lucy Wilson Mysteries, announced last month. The book is due to be released commercially early 2018, but limited copies are available now via the Candy Jar website.

  • Candy Jar Books is also offering an exciting new opportunity for aspiring writers. Launching at Candy Jar Book Festival in Cardiff, writers can submit a short story based on the Doctor Who character – Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart. More details can be found in this article.

The Doctor Who Audio Annual

Saturday, 29 July 2017 - Reported by Marcus
The Doctor Who Audio Annual (Credit: BBC Worldwide)BBC Worldwide is to release The Doctor Who Audio Annual featuring audio versions of vintage tales first seen in the Doctor Who Annuals published in the 1960s through to the 1980s.

The Annual, out in December, features classic adventures, from the first six incarnations of The Doctor, read by stars of the show: Peter Purves (who played companion Steven), Anneke Wills (Polly), Geoffrey Beevers (The Master), Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) and Nicola Bryant (Peri).
For two decades, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s, every fan of the Doctor hoped to find The Doctor Who Annual in their Christmas stocking. Larger than life and twice as colourful, the stories within were exuberant — and often charmingly naive — in their take on ‘the children’s own programme which adults adore’.

Stories include
  • The Sons of Grekk, in which the First Doctor is held prisoner in a brutal, otherworldly society.
  • The King of Golden Death where the Second Doctor, Polly and Ben have materialised inside an Ancient Egyptian pyramid.
  • Dark Intruders, with The Third Doctor, Jo and the Brigadier confronting a familiar adversary
  • Conundrum with the Fourth Doctor, Adric and K9 experiencing warped physics in the corridors of the TARDIS.
  • The Penalty, where a delirious Fifth Doctor finds old friends and adversaries ganging up on him
  • The Real Hereward, where the Sixth Doctor and Peri plunge into a dangerous period of British history.
Also included are two vintage essays on the character of the Doctor: Who is Doctor Who? from 1966 and The Phoenix in the TARDIS from 1968.

The Annual can be pre-ordered from Amazon

Doctor Who Magazine 515

Saturday, 22 July 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Doctor Who Magazine 515 (Credit: Panini)The next issue of Doctor Who Magazine takes a look back over the last several years of Doctor Who, as its outgoing head writer Steven Moffat leaves the show with this year's Christmas Special.

With his first contribution to the show in 2004, The Empty Child, did he expect to still be writing for the series some thirteen years later?
No, God, no!. God, no! I also didn’t think I’d do the showrunning job for more than three years, and I’m here after six series. Yes, I’ve been writing Doctor Who stories since 2004. That’s a hell of a long time. When I wrote The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, I wondered if I’d ever write another Doctor Who story. I was very keen to, I really wanted to. I remember asking, ‘Would you have me back next year...?’
What's next for the writer?
I’m looking forward to the idea of not having to automatically say no to everything else! Whether that’s writing jobs, or weekends away. I can write different things. I’m looking forward to that, hugely. But I am so glad it happened. I’d have been miserable if I’d never got to write Doctor Who! It’s been amazing. Of course it’s been amazing.

Also inside this issue:
  • PRODUCTION NOTES Steven Moffat writes his final column for DWM, and his last-ever Doctor Who words!
  • THE TOP 20! A look back at 20 amazing things about the Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who – plus tributes from Russell T Davies, Chris Chibnall, Mark Gatiss and many others...
  • THE EMPIRE OF MARK GATISS The concluding part of our all-encompassing interview with actor/writer Mark Gatiss!
  • THE PARLIAMENT OF FEAR There’s a brand-new adventure for the Doctor and Bill Potts in Part 1 of a new comic strip story, written by Scott Gray, with art by Staz Johnson.
  • RISE AND FALL Reviews of the 2017 series, and the season finale World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls.
  • TURNED UP TO ELEVEN The Fact of Fiction examines the Eleventh Doctor’s début adventure, 2010’s The Eleventh Hour!
  • REVIEWS The latest DVD and audio releases are put under the microscope.
  • COMING SOON Previews of all the latest Doctor Who CD and book releases.
  • PLUS! All the latest official news, the Watcher’s column, prize-winning competitions, the DWM crossword, the 2017 Season Survey – and much, much more!

Now We Are Six Hundred

Thursday, 18 May 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster
BBC Books have announced a new hardback book for the summer to tie in with National Poetry Day:

Now We Are Six Hundred (Credit: BBC Books)BBC Books Publishing Director Albert DePetrillo has acquired Doctor Who: Now We Are Six Hundred, the very first collection of Time Lord verse. BBC Books have world rights, with North American rights sold to HarperCollins.

A gentle and humorous riff on the classic Now We Are Six, this is a collection of charming, funny and whimsical poems that celebrate the joys, sorrows and wonders of Time Lord life. Written by author James Goss, the book features illustrations by former Doctor Who Executive Producer Russell T Davies – his first role as an illustrator, using the comic artist skills he developed in his youth.

Albert DePetrillo says:
This is a book I’ve long wanted to publish, and James and Russell have realised the idea brilliantly, well beyond anything I’d hoped. It’s something very special, a unique gift for every Doctor Who fan. For full effect, please be sure to read these poems aloud to your friends, preferably more than once.
James Goss says:
BBC Books have carefully baited an irresistible trap to lure people into reading poetry. Russell's beautiful illustrations make this the most charming Doctor Who book there's ever been (and I'm including that magical first Doctor Who book you discovered as a child). The poems have been a delight to work on. Who could resist retelling the fiendish Daleks’ Masterplan in verse, or finding bizarre and ludicrous rhymes for monster names?
Russell T Davies says:
I’ve been drawing for Doctor Who long before I was writing it, so it was like time-travel for me, voyaging back to that young scribbler who used to cover his school desk with Daleks!

Doctor Who: Now We Are Six Hundred will be published in hardback on 14th September, two weeks before National Poetry Day on 28th September.

Doctor Who Official Block

Friday, 5 May 2017 - Reported by Marcus

Nerd Block, in association with BBC Worldwide, is launching the Doctor Who Official Block.

Subscribers will be able to receive exclusive and limited edition collectibles from their favorite Time Lords. The bi-monthly Block will include 5-7 mystery items each month, allowing fans to get their hands on official Doctor Who merchandise.

This month’s Block features an exclusive 6.5" Tenth Doctor figure, inspired by the Tenth Doctor's final episode The End of Time Part Two.

Doctor Who Official Block Lead Buyer Nicole Giffen explains her choice to include the figure in the first Block:
David Tennant is one of the most-beloved Doctors, so we couldn’t wait to include an exclusive variant figure of the Tenth Doctor in our Block. Showing the Doctor in his battle-worn state is an ode to the episode The End of Time Part Two, where he fights against the returning Time Lords. It’s one of my favorite scenes, and the figure captures the Doctor perfectly.
James Watson of Titan Merchandise had more details about the Battle Deco Tenth Doctor vinyl figure:
We're big David Tennant fans, and we wanted something special for the first Doctor Who Block. We wanted to give the fans something that would look great on a shelf (hence the larger scale) as well as pay tribute to an iconic moment in the show's history
Watson also talked about future plans for the project.
We will be announcing our next Doctor Who blind-box wave very soon. I can't say too much, but it'll cover the show's history and will feature some characters that we have been asked about for YEARS! I've seen the designs and I'm incredibly excited to reveal them. We're all colossal Doctor Who fans. There's a real joy in being able to produce actual physical pieces of all my favourite characters.
