Germany: FOX unable to produce German dub of Deep Breath for premiere

Wednesday, 20 August 2014 - Reported by Pascal Salzmann
FOX Deutschland have announced on Facebook that they are not going to air the German dub of Deep Breath on Saturday, but instead will only broadcast the original English language version. According to the channel this decision is due to the BBC's enhanced security after the leaks, which resulted in the material arriving later than usual and making it impossible to finish the German dub on time.

FOX have apologised to viewers, and stated that they will make the German-dubbed episode available through On-Demand services from Sky and Kabel Deutschland as soon as possible.

Here is the full statement by FOX:

Dear FOX-fans, it is our goal to present to you German premieres as near as possible to their world premieres - in the original language and in german. We did this successfully with THE WALKING DEAD, THE BRIDGE - AMERICA and DA VINCI'S DEMONS. That is why we were proud to announce a simulcast broadcast to the UK premiere of Series 8 of DOCTOR WHO. And your very positive feedback showed us that this is the right thing to do.

During producing of the show a script was leaked to the public ( http://bit.ly/1tgwjcR ) which lead to advanced security politics and later arrivals of material and dubbings. This is the reason why we are only able to fulfill one part of our promise: You will be able to experience Series 8 of DOCTOR WHO on FOX on the same day as the UK, but only in its original version. We are very sorry! The German episodes will be presented to you on your VoD account at Sky and Kabel Deutschland. As soon as they are available, you will get a notice from us here at Facebook.

Doctor Who: Deep Breath will air this Saturday at 9 PM on FOX.

New Zealand airdate announced

Wednesday, 20 August 2014 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) (Credit: Ray Burmiston, BBC/BBC Worldwide 2014)PRIME in New Zealand have announced that they will be broadcasting the new series of Doctor Who starring Peter Capaldi from Sunday 31st August, at 7:30pm.

In recent years regular series episodes have aired in the country two Thursdays after broadcast in the United Kingdom, so the new timeslot marks a shorter interval to wait for viewers. However, for those able to get tickets, the series premiere Deep Breath can be seen a week ahead in cinemas - some presentations within a few hours of UK transmission.

Full Circle: Frazer Hines cast in "Outlander", which he inspired

Wednesday, 20 August 2014 - Reported by Josiah Rowe
Frazer Hines, who played the Second Doctor's stalwart companion Jamie McCrimmon from 1966 to 1969, has been cast in the television adaptation of the time-travel romance Outlander, reveals TV Guide.com. Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander novels, has previously stated that she was inspired to write the series after watching an episode of Doctor Who featuring Hines as Jamie:

I rarely watch TV, but at the time I was in the habit of viewing weekly PBS reruns of Doctor Who..., because it gave me just enough time to do my nails. So, while pondering the setting for my hypothetical historical novel, I happened to see one very old episode of Doctor Who featuring a "companion" of the Doctor's—a young Scottish lad named Jamie MacCrimmon, whom the Doctor had picked up in 1745. This character wore a kilt, which I thought rather fetching, and demonstrated—in this particular episode—a form of pigheaded male gallantry that I've always found endearing: the strong urge on the part of a man to protect a woman, even though he may realize that she's plainly capable of looking after herself.

I was sitting in church the next day, thinking idly about this particular show (no, oddly enough, I don't remember what the sermon was about that day), when I said suddenly to myself, Well, heck. You want to write a book, you need a historical period, and it doesn't matter where or when. The important thing is just to start, somewhere. Okay. Fine. Scotland, eighteenth century.

Gabaldon gave the male protagonist of her series the first name "Jamie", after the character which inspired her creation. The character's surname is "Fraser"; however, Gabaldon says that this is a coincidence:

No, actually, Frazer has nothing to do with Jamie’s last name—owing to the local PBS station cutting off the “Dr. Who” credits in order to run pledge appeals, I didn’t know the actor’s name until some years later, after the first book had been written. I did send a copy to Frazer then, though, thanking him for the kilt.

Now, Frazer Hines will appear in the television series based on the books he inspired. Hines will play Sir Gordon Fletcher, an English prison warden, in an episode which will air in the second half of the first series (currently scheduled for early 2015).

Blue Peter to broadcast 12th Doctor Special

Wednesday, 20 August 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
Tomorrow's edition of CBBC magazine programme Blue Peter will be a special programme dedicated to Peter Capaldi as the incoming Doctor and featuring the winners of last year's competition to design sonic devices for the Paternoster Gang of Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Commander Strax.

The 12th Doctor: A Blue Peter Special - presented by Barney Harwood, Lindsey Russell and Radzi Chinyanganya - takes the three young contest winners Connor, Arthur and Amber behind the scenes of Doctor Who to see their sonic gauntlet, lorgnette and hat pin in action, where they also meet Capaldi.

In addition, Dan Starkey, who plays Strax, talks about how he is turned into a Sontaran via prosthetics, while the make-it will be a TARDIS T-shirt.

The programme, which airs at 5.30pm, will be repeated on Saturday at 8.20am and then at 6.25pm as part of a range of Doctor Who-related programmes being shown on CBBC from 1.40pm - also comprising episodes from The Sarah Jane Adventures as well as the animated adventures The Infinite Quest and Dreamland plus documentary 12 Again - in the run-up to the broadcast of Deep Breath that evening.

The show will also be available to TV licence-payers in the UK for a limited time via the BBC iPlayer.

As part of its celebration of the new series of Doctor Who, the Blue Peter website also has details about how to make Doctor Who character masks as well as Doctor Who T-shirts, and is inviting people to invent a new Doctor Who character.

Bumper 100-page issue for new Doctor Who Magazine

Tuesday, 19 August 2014 - Reported by John Bowman
The new edition of Doctor Who Magazine catches up on set with Peter Capaldi for what is billed as his most extensive and revealing interview to date.

In issue 477 – on sale this coming Thursday – the publication asked him how he had gone about making the part his own:

"Well," says Peter, "you begin with yourself. You begin with those elements of yourself that you feel would be at home in the role. There's an old actors' adage that you don't become the role, the role becomes you. It's trying to find those parts of you that will fit with the Doctor, and understand those bits that don't come so naturally to you, that you have to fabricate. I kept looking for people in my life who I thought had elements of the Doctor about them, and were inspirational in some ways. I composed a list of those . . . "

"Also, it's recognising what's been written," Peter continues. "My Doctor is written slightly differently from some of the other Doctors, and the Doctor changes quite dramatically from episode to episode. Some demand more of your comedy chops, graver or more serious episodes demand a more sombre creature. All these variations have to live in the same body, in the same face. Putting all that together is tricky . . ."
The new DWM, which is a bumper 100 pages this edition, includes a giant double-sided poster featuring Capaldi on one side and a Dalek on the other (pictured below) plus:
  • Read extensive previews of the first four episodes of the new series – Deep Breath, Into The Dalek, Robot of Sherwood and Listen – as DWM talks exclusively to writers Steven Moffat, Phil Ford and Mark Gatiss

  • A new comic strip – The Eye of Torment – begins, written by Scott Gray and illustrated by Martin Geraghty
