Time Vortex VR

Thursday, 14 December 2017 - Reported by Marcus
Time Vortex (Credit: BBC Worldwide)A new game has been released by the BBC. Doctor Who Time Vortex VR gives players the chance to pilot the TARDIS through the depths of the space-time vortex inside a virtual reality version of the show’s title sequence.

The game is a VR reboot of the successful Time Vortex 360 mobile game released earlier this year. As they speed through time, players will tackle hazards and obstacles emerging from the future ahead of them and will need to quickly react by physically turning around to evade threats from the past. As players progress through the game, they are transported into different time zones from past eras, from the current vortex to re-imagined designs from the 1960s and 1980s.

The game is available to play using cardboard headsets, Google Daydream, Samsung Gear VR and HTC Vive via your web browser. However, those without headsets can play the game with mobiles and tablets running newer versions of Android or iOS and the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox or Safari. A full list of all supported devices is available here.

To play, fans simply need to visit bbc.in/TimeVortexVR. Like the 360 game, the VR version is an endless runner, which gets more and more difficult the longer people play, taking them on a visually intense journey through the iconic vortex from the show's opening credits. Using the device's accelerometer, players control the game by physically moving around, even giving the player the ability to turn around and travel backwards in time.

Jo Pearce, Creative Director, BBC Digital Drama, said:
This game allows you to step inside one of the most iconic title sequences in TV history, as you pilot the TARDIS through modern, 80s and 60s versions of the vortex. Digital innovation is at the very heart of Doctor Who – and this new game combines casual, arcade-style gaming with virtual reality to create an unforgettable experience.

After releasing the 360 version of the game, we had lots of comments from players suggesting it would make a great VR experience. For this re-boot we wanted to offer a VR gaming experience that is as accessible as possible and test the limits of what is possible to develop using WebVR.
Developed for the BBC by Goodboy Digital, the game has been created using the WebVR API and combines cutting-edge HTML5 and WebGL using PixiJS v5.0 to create a breath-taking journey that works on a wide range of hardware.

Wednesday, 27 September 2017 - Reported by Marcus
Doctor Who Infinity (Credit: Tiny Rebel Games)A new Doctor Who game, Doctor Who Infinity, is to be released for PC and mobile platforms worldwide, in Spring 2018.

The game is produced by Tiny Rebel Games Ltd, the team behind the popular game Doctor Who Legacy, under official license from BBC Worldwide. The new game is being funded as a joint effort between the Welsh Government’s Media Investment Budget and British game publisher/developer Double Eleven Limited.

It is being developed in close collaboration with Seed Studio along with a broad team of UK-based talent including well-known Doctor Who actors, writers, and artists. Cardiff-based award-winning audio designer and composer Stafford Bawler will be providing audio direction for the game. Doctor Who Infinity will be released both on PC and on major mobile platforms.

Susan Cummings, of Tiny Rebel Games, is the executive producer on Doctor Who Infinity.
It has been an incredible delight to be able to pull together such extraordinarily talented people to realize our ambitions for this new game. I am continually humbled by the quality of work they are doing and I think Doctor Who fans everywhere are going to be amazed by how we have taken everything we have learned from making the award-winning gameplay of Doctor Who: Legacy and brought it to the next level in every way imaginable
Doctor Who Infinity builds on the addictive puzzle gameplay of Doctor Who: Legacy to immerse players in comic book style puzzle adventures. Each story-based adventure has its own unique art style and author. To bring these original stories to life, Tiny Rebel Games has recruited an incredible team of major British Doctor Who writers and internationally renowned UK-based comic book artists to illustrate the stories.

Ken Skates AM, Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure in Wales says
We are delighted that Tiny Rebel Games recognizes the world-class creative talent present in Wales, especially in writing, art, and audio. By moving their business here from Los Angeles last year, Tiny Rebel has given Wales a valuable opportunity. Enabling us to invest in and grow the country’s experience in the burgeoning video game industry, while also utilizing local talent. The fact that the company have now developed a Doctor Who game, which of course films in Cardiff, only adds to this ‘made-in-Wales’ success story.
Lee Hutchinson, managing director of Double Eleven Limited added
As an indie publisher, we’re always looking for up and coming UK talent that we can support and this was a perfect opportunity for us to partner with Tiny Rebel Games in making an exciting new Doctor Who game. It also allows us to expand our expertise in mobile gaming whilst contributing our knowledge of the PC marketplace.

Still popular four years later, the game continues to add new content weekly and is well over 120 hours of gameplay.

With a soft launch in early Spring, Doctor Who Infinity will be live globally on PC, iTunes, and Google Play in late Spring 2018.

You can follow news about the game via the website and on Facebook, or Twitter.

Doctor Who: Time Vortex 360

Wednesday, 17 May 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The BBC have announced a new game that can be played on mobile devices:

Doctor Who: Time Vortex 360 (Credit: BBC)New BBC 360° mobile game lets Doctor Who fans pilot the TARDIS through the vortex

Doctor Who fans can pilot the TARDIS on its most exhilarating journey yet as it careers through the depths of the space time vortex in the BBC’s first ever 360 arcade game, Doctor Who Time Vortex 360.

Fans simply need to visit bbc.in/dw360 using their smartphone or tablet and by physically moving their mobile device through 360 degrees, they will be able to fly the TARDIS within an increasingly turbulent time vortex.

As they speed through time, players will tackle hazards and obstacles emerging from the future ahead of them, but in a unique and literal twist will sometimes need to physically turn themselves to look backwards in time in order to evade threats emerging from the past.

Jo Pearce, creative director, BBC Digital Drama, said:
The beauty of this game is that you can use your mobile phone to fly the TARDIS wherever you are. Digital innovation is at the very heart of Doctor Who – this 360 degree game allows people to navigate the TARDIS through time and space like never before.

We’ve seen a lot of innovation recently in the 360 and virtual reality space, but the majority has focused on ‘experiential’ video-based experiences. This game, however, brings together the worlds of casual, arcade-style gaming and 360/VR to create a fun Doctor Who experience that people can easily pick up and play, wherever they are.

The game is an endless runner, which gets more and more difficult the longer people play, taking them on a visually intense journey through the iconic vortex from the show's opening credits. Using the device's accelerometer, the game is controlled by physically moving around, even giving the player the ability to turn around and travel backwards in time.

Designed as a mobile-first experience for the BBC by Goodboy Digital, the game combines cutting edge HTML5 and WebGL using PixiJS v5.0 to create a breath-taking journey that works on a wide range of hardware.

The game is available to play on BBC Taster, where fans can rate the game and provide feedback.

INTO THE TIME VORTEX - BOX GAME

Our first game, Into The time Vortex, will be released in early 2017 and will feature Daleks V Cybermen. The Doctor and his various companions all have a role in setting the scenario, objectives and the special rules for the game. Additional releases introduce many of the Doctor’s foes and allies, each with their own unique characteristics.

The gameplay allows for three different levels of play, ranging from the harsh environment of the Battle, through the world of the Adventure and finally allowing you to take part in an Episode. Each level of play has its own challenges, as dictated by eight scenarios that come with the game. The Doctor and his companions all have key roles in the scenarios and have their own rules that add to the experience. The rules booklets are simple to use. The basic game uses Battle cards that can be played to enhance your own plans or thwart those of your enemies. There are also clearly laid out Faction Recruitment cards that detail the forces being used, their individual weapons and abilities, plus generic and character specific Adventure cards that may be used to create more advanced versions of the game. In addition, a set of Event cards can be found in the box, providing the means to weld all the aspects of the game together and take part in the type of adventures that make the TV programme what it is.

Warlord Games: Cybermen figures (Credit: Warlord Games)The initial release consists of everything you need to play, including specially created plastic miniatures of two of The Doctor’s iconic foes, the Daleks and the Cybermen. There are 12 ‘snap fit’ miniatures for each of these factions, plus the Cybermen sprue includes six Cybernates that can aid their larger brethren. Of course, no Doctor Who based game is complete without The Doctor himself, so you will also find a miniature of the 12th Doctor, ready to take part in the action.

One boxed set, three ways to play! But that’s not all, as there are a number of further releases planned which will add more miniatures, cards and opportunities to gain victory over your opponent. New factions, Companions and additional Doctors will become available over time, so the game can keep growing, as will your collection of finely crafted pewter and plastic heroes and villains.

More details can be found via the dedicated Doctor Who Into The Time Vortex website.

COMING SOON:

  • Warlord Games: Cybermen Collectors Set (cover) (Credit: Warlord Games)Cyberman ten figure pewter set. This release, to mark the 50th Anniversary of The Cybermen, will feature 10 key designs from over the years.
