The Husbands of River Song: press interviewsBookmark and Share

The Husbands of River Song (Credit: BBC/Simon Ridgway)The BBC have released interviews with Peter Capaldi, Alex Kingston and Steven Moffat to promote the forthcoming Christmas special, The Husbands of River Song.

What can you tell us about the Doctor Who Christmas special this year?
Well the Christmas special is very Christmassy, which I’m sure everyone will be relieved to hear. It finds the Doctor in a Dickensian kind of world, in a Christmas card sort of world which he’s been brought to in order to do a favour for a king. So there’s quite a festive spirit to the episode. But the favour is more complex and isn’t exclusively for the benefit of the king, but more for the benefit of the king’s consort.

What is your favourite scene from this episode?
I have lots of favourite scenes from the Christmas episode, but I think being met by Matt Lucas on a wonderful wintery Dickensian street with the TARDIS covered in snow was delightful, because it was like a Doctor Who Christmas card. Matt is such a fabulously funny person to have around, so I loved that!

Do you like filming Christmas episodes?
Yes I do like them - last year’s was a bit scarier than this one, this is more openly festive. I like the idea of ghost stories at Christmas and frightening things seem to work rather well in the festive environment.

Would you like to see River Song return?
Yes of course, because Alex is fabulous and it’s always lovely to work with her.

Who is Nardole?
The character of Nardole is played by Matt Lucas so you can expect a lot of laughs and pathos. He is, as ever, a hugely loveable personality, a little naïve, a little out of his depth and quite cosmic.
What was it like to come back?
I was quite surprised when I was asked to come back, but I was happy to because I just thought it would be great fun. It’s such a great character, she’s become so beloved by lots of fans and I’ve had them saying it would be so great for her to come back and to see her interacting with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. I was actually thrilled when Steven decided he wanted to explore that too.

What did you think of the script?
It’s a wonderful slapstick caper. There’s a lot of great laughs, there’s a lot of fabulous River one-liners. The fans are going to love the things she says and there’s a lot of play. They’re also fighting a very interesting alien played by Greg Davies. It’s a really great episode and Steven has done my character proud.

Has this episode been challenging?
I’ve been really lucky in this episode as River gets to do an awful lot. She gets to run around in snow, I’ve been flying and have done harness work against a green screen. She’s got quite a few husbands in this episode and there’s a lot of fabulous quick-fire dialogue between her and the Doctor. She gets to snog the most handsome man in the work, his character name is Ramone. It’s all going on!

What were your favourite moments during filming?
The favourite moment so far for me was stepping back on to the TARDIS, because the interior of it has changed yet again. I’ve been on two different TARDIS incarnations, and to walk into this one and know it’s a familiar space but at the same time it’s different, was great. I love this one - everything works which is really fun, I stand there pressing all the buttons, it’s great!
Can you give us an introduction to the episode you’ve written this year?
The Doctor is an all new man and has been for a while. It may have slipped his mind that out there, in a very tangled and complicated way, is his wife that has never seen this face before and doesn’t even know about this incarnation. We’re about to stand with the Doctor and see what River is like when she doesn’t know he’s looking. We’re about to see what River thinks of Matt Smith turning into Peter Capaldi.

What made you want to write this episode?
River Song meets the Capaldi Doctor, that’s got to be fun - I’d like to write that. That’s what made me want to write. I knew it had to be a big romp for Christmas day and there’s nothing like River Song to make that evident - River brings a whole storm of camp glamour to it.

Is it any different writing a Christmas episode of Doctor Who?
Yes, you need to have a bit of Christmas in it, but that’s never felt to me like a tremendous impediment, it’s a hook to hang it on. Sometimes we go very Christmassy - ‘A Christmas Carol’ was incredibly Christmassy, so was ‘The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe’ and ‘The Snowmen’ had the appearance of Christmas without being very Christmassy. Last Christmas is actually the least Christmassy episode we’ve ever done, except for the fact it actually had Santa Claus in it - I rather loved last Christmas. This year’s episode starts Christmassy and has a comedy romp!

Do you enjoy writing a Christmas episode?
I like Christmas specials - I know some people don’t. Some friends of mine don’t like Christmas specials very much and they’re always complaining about all the tinsel, the goodwill and the twinkly stars, and the lovely snow on the rooftops. I love all that, I love Christmas as a day and as a festival. I love that it’s dark, twinkly and rich red, all those things I adore so it’s no hardship for me at all.

Who is King Hydroflax?
King Hydroflax is a very bad King, who as it turns out is mostly cyborg - in fact only his head has remained. He’s a vicious, terrible and deeply stupid man and a dreadful tyrant.

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine is on general sale today (10th December), this time looking forward to this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special – The Husbands of River Song – and also features an exclusive interview with the Doctor himself, Peter Capaldi...

Talking about how the Doctor going to cope with meeting River Song again:
There’s a very different dynamic. As you’ll see, she doesn’t know it’s him at first. She can’t be convinced that it is, so she’s sort of not interested in him! He gets a taste of his own medicine, from her. She treats him very coldly, and flirts with a lot of other people in front of him. He doesn’t get any flirting, which I think upsets him. Eventually – finally! – she recognises him. But then another element comes into play and… well, you’ll have to wait and see. But it’s fun...

BBC Books have announced a new hardback book to tie in with the recent series of Doctor Who, focussing on the character of Ashildr as played by Maisie Williams:

The Legends of Ashildr (Credit: BBC Books)DOCTOR WHO: THE LEGENDS OF ASHILDR
NEVER-BEFORE-TOLD STORIES OF THE WOMAN WHO LIVED
Written by James Goss, Jenny T Colgan, David Llewellyn and Justin Richards
Published by BBC Books on 10th December (hardback) [pre-order]

Ten thousand hours is all it takes to master any skill. Twenty thousand, and you’re the best in the world.
Over a hundred thousand, and you’re the best there’s ever been.

Ashildr, a young Viking girl, died helping the Doctor and Clara to save her village. Brought back to life by the Doctor using alien technology, she is now immortal – The Woman Who Lived. Since then, Ashildr has kept journals, detailing her extraordinary life.

The Legends of Ashildr is a glimpse of some of those stories: the terrors she has faced, the battles she has won, and the treasures she has found. These are tales of a woman who lived longer than she should ever have lived – and lost more than she can even remember.

This title features Ashildr, as played by Maisie Williams. The Legends of Ashildr is set between her first two encounters with the Doctor, as shown in the 2015 episodes The Girl Who Died and The Woman Who Lived.

Competition

To be in with a chance to win a copy of The Legends of Ashildr courtesy of BBC Books, simply answer the following question:
By the time of the Doctor's encounter with Ashildr in 17th Century England, her father had become a distant memory ... what was his name?

Ninth Doctor Comics to ContinueBookmark and Share

Wednesday, 9 December 2015 - Reported by Marcus
Ninth Doctor #1 (Credit: Titan)Titan Comics and BBC Worldwide have announced the ongoing Ninth Doctor comic series will continue.

Titan Comics’ launched the Ninth Doctor in a 5-part mini-series in 2015. Due to the popularity of the Ninth Doctor, as played by Christopher Eccleston, the series will now join the Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors as a monthly ongoing title.

The Ninth Doctor comic writer, Cavan Scott (Who-ology) will continue to work on the series and says

It’s absolutely fantastic that the Ninth Doctor is returning for more adventures with Rose and Captain Jack. The new ongoing series kicks off a new era and a new mission for this much-loved TARDIS team. Along the way they’ll encounter old friends and foes as well as startling new faces. I’ve been blown away by the love for Doctor Number Nine that I’ve seen at comic cons and signings over the last year. It’s a real privilege to be continuing the Ninth Doctor’s story. It really is the trip of a lifetime.
The first in the brand new Ninth Doctor ongoing story arc will hit shelves in April 2016, with interior art on the opening three-parter by Adriana Melo (Miss Marvel, Spiderman).

SPACE confirms time for Christmas SpecialBookmark and Share

Wednesday, 9 December 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Canadian broadcaster SPACE have now confirmed that they plan to broadcast this year's special, The Husbands of River Song, on Christmas Day at 9:00pm ET.

SPACE-MAS 2015 (Credit: SPACE)Space is the place where Ho! Ho! Ho! meets Who! Who! Who! as SPACE-MAS returns with 16 days of out-of-this-world programming. SPACE-MAS would not be merry without an all-new DOCTOR WHO Christmas special, preceded by a three day CHRISTMAS WITH THE DOCTOR MARATHON. SPACE-MAS 2015 also gifts viewers with Harry Potter and Nicolas Cage movie marathons as well as the chance to catch-up on fan-favorite series like FACE OFF, SUPERNATURAL, and THE LIBRARIANS.

In keeping with tradition, the TARDIS tops the SPACE-MAS tree with the much anticipated premiere of the 2015 DOCTOR WHO Christmas special, THE HUSBANDS OF RIVER SONG. Premiering at 9 p.m. ET on Christmas Day, this year’s special reunites the Doctor (Peter Capaldi, THE THICK OF IT) with – “spoilers!” – his wife, River Song (Alex Kingston, ER) and marks the first time Capaldi’s Doctor and Kingston will share the screen together in these iconic roles. The 75 minute special also features guest appearances from LITTLE BRITIAN’s Matt Lucas and MAN DOWN’s Greg Davies. Leading up to the premiere, Space gets viewers in the Christmas special spirit with the CHRISTMAS WITH THE DOCTOR MARATHON. Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 8 a.m. ET, the marathon features all past DOCTOR WHO Christmas specials, a selection of past episodes, the 2013 docu-drama AN ADVENTURE IN TIME AND SPACE, and all the episodes of Seasons 8 and 9.

At the time of writing BBC America have yet to confirm when they will air the special, but it will almost certainly be at the same time as SPACE.

Christmas ScheduleBookmark and Share

Wednesday, 9 December 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
Radio Times Festive Double Issue (19 Dec 2015 - 2 Jan 2016) (Credit: Radio Times)The Christmas double edition of the Radio Times is now generally available, containing all the programming details of the main UK channels for the festive period - including of course the premiere of The Husbands of River Song on Christmas Day itself at 5:15pm, which features as one of "the very best of TV, Film and Radio this Christmas".

The magazine also features a two page interview with Peter Capaldi, during which he talks about the departure of Jenna Coleman this year:
I found it really sad, as Jen's a great girl an a great actress. I used to love being in the Tardis with her, we'd just have a laugh, you know? And that's all I want out of work, I'm afraid, to go along and have a nice time. While playing the most iconic character in the history of British television!

As well as this Christmas's new episode, Doctor Who continues to be available to watch on other digital channels/ After a short break Watch returns with a daily dose of the tenth Doctor from the 20th December leading up to a double dose of Christmas specials on the day itself as he encounters The Next Doctor through to The End of Time; post-Christmas it's the turn of the eleventh Doctor to dominate the afternoon schedules. Meanwhile, Horror Channel continue their latest run though the 'classic' era, with Christmas Day seeing the fourth Doctor end up dealing with the Horror of Fang Rock.

However, there's more fourth Doctor action on BBC4 on the 28th/29th December as the channel broadcasts The Face of Evil! As Patrick Mulkern observes in the Radio Times:
The Face of Evil seems like a random selection from the archive, but BBC4 wanted a serial that aired in festive days of yore and this four-parter began on New Year's Day 1977.

Odds on Who

With the Christmas Day scheduled firmly locked down, bets are firmly in the running as to how those shows will fare with viewers. Here are the average odds across the various agencies at the time of writing:

Time BBC One Odds ITV Odds
3:00pm The Queen 32/1
3:10pm Brave - Cameraman to the Queen -
4:10pm Countrywise Winter Wonderland -
4:35pm BBC News and Weather -
4:45pm Stick Man -
5:00pm For The Love Of Dogs 100/1
5:15pm Doctor Who 24/1
6:00pm ITV Evening News -
6:15pm Strictly Come Dancing 14/1 You've Been Framed With Bells On -
6:45pm Emmerdale 115/1
7:30pm Call The Midwife 26/1
7:45pm Coronation Street 27/1
8:45pm Eastenders 11/2 Downton Abbey 3/1
9:45pm Mrs Browns Boys evens
10:45pm Michael McIntyre's Big Christmas Show - Our Cilla 71/1

Mrs Brown's Boys is the runaway favourite at present which is unsurprising as it has been the highest rated show three years in a row, with second placed Eastenders topping the chart in 2010 and 2011. The odds currently place Doctor Who as the fifth most likely to top the chart: in 2009 The End Of Time (part one) arguably achieved the top spot on Christmas Day, when the combined viewers on BBC One (11.57m) and the simulcast BBC HD (0.47m) made a total of 12.05m versus The Royle Family's combined total of 11.92m and Eastenders of 11.67m.

Last year none of the Christmas shows managed to break the 10 million mark, with Doctor Who ending up in sixth place with its 8.28m viewers. Could Alex Kingston's return in The Husbands of River Song lead to the crown once again being in the show's grasp once the consolidated ratings are known? It won't be too long to find out, and in the meantime readers can watch out for the launch of our annual Guess the ratings competition soon!

France 4 announce Series 9 launch dateBookmark and Share

Tuesday, 8 December 2015 - Reported by Chuck Foster
The Magician's Apprentice (Credit: BBC / David Venni)Viewers in France will get to see the latest adventures of the Doctor and Clara straight after Christmas this year, as France 4 confirm that the series premiere, The Magician's Apprentice, will air on Saturday 26th December at 8:50pm.

The series premieres three months after the UK, with French viewers getting to see the episodes in their native French dub earlier than in recent years - Matt Smith's first series aired from February 2011, Series 6 from May 2012, Series 7 from May 2013 and then Series 8 from March this year (the channel did of course air The Day of the Doctor on the 50th Anniversary!).

An exclusive in France since 2005, France 4 lets you travel through space and time once again with the unprecedented ninth season of the British cult series Doctor Who. After a sensational year as the Doctor, Peter Capaldi returns with Jenna Coleman at his side, and guest stars including Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones.

The Doctor and Clara have now built a dynamic partnership of equals. The bond between them is stronger than ever, and they do not shun the pleasure and emotions that time and space give them. They are about to embark on their biggest adventure and will have to fight against ghosts, the Vikings and the ultimate evil ... the Daleks.

With his British rock'n'roll attitude, the Doctor is ready to stand up against any monster threatening the universe. Missy is back to torment him again; the Zygons inspire fear by transforming into cloned humans, and a new meeting operates on a cosmic wave.

The eighth season of Doctor Who, the most watched of all on the BBC, has won rave reviews for the new partnership, with the duo in the programme traversing moments of intense suspense and standalone episodes of narrative innovation, and the prime time series offering a cinematic journey through time.

"The cast of this 9th season had a broad range of guests: beautiful, funny mad Missy is back; exceptional Maisie Williams portrays a character who will challenge the Doctor unexpectedly, and of course Osgood will return from the dead - but the Doctor could well be surprised and had better not rely on his first fan.

This season will be crazy and exciting; we will push the boundaries with the most experimental of all episodes of the series. Indeed, I booked something special for the Doctor, but I can't tell you more, just that is is unprecedented in the series!" (Steven Moffat, writer and executive producer)
