CraveTV announced to stream Doctor Who in Canada

Peter Capaldi as the Doctor (Credit: BBC/David Venni)Bell Media and BBC Worldwide North America have announced a new licensing agreement for Doctor Who in Canada, which will see streaming service CraveTV become the exclusive streaming service for the show in the the country.

The agreement will see Series 9 made available this summer, with the previous eight moving to the platform by the end of the year. Series 10 onwards will be made available after their full-season broadcasts on SPACE.

The series has been the most-watched entertainment specialty programme on SPACE in their key A25-54, A18-49, and A18-34 demos, with Season 9 achieving an average of 697,000 viewers in its Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET timeslot - becoming the most-watched season in series history on Space among the key A25-54 and A18-49 demos. The most recent episode to be shown, Christmas's The Husbands of River Song, was the most-watched Christmas special in the channel's history with 856,000 viewers, with its A25-54 and A18-49 demos making it the most-watched programme on Christmas Day on Canadian television.


Series 1-8 Doctor Who are currently available to stream via Netflix in Canada until their current license agreement to show the series ends; the streaming service has already ceased showing the series in the United States, and is expected to end in the United Kingdom at the end of April.

Final Series 9 Ratings From Space Channel

SPACE Logo (Credit: SPACE)The Space Channel, the Canadian broadcaster of Doctor Who, has given Doctor Who News an update on the final ratings for Series 9.

DOCTOR WHO remains the most watched program on Space with an average of 696500 viewers for Season 9. Season 9 is also the most-watched season of the series to date in the key demos of A25-54 and A18-49, with 415,500 and 405,900 viewers respectively.

While Doctor Who has remained their most watched program, the average viewership has gone down over the final few episodes. In November Doctor Who News reported that an average of 731,000 people watched per episode. All ratings only cover traditional television viewers including PVR, not those who watched via apps or online.

SPACE confirms time for Christmas Special

Canadian broadcaster SPACE have now confirmed that they plan to broadcast this year's special, The Husbands of River Song, on Christmas Day at 9:00pm ET.

SPACE-MAS would not be merry without an all-new DOCTOR WHO Christmas special, preceded by a three day CHRISTMAS WITH THE DOCTOR MARATHON. SPACE-MAS 2015 also gifts viewers with Harry Potter and Nicolas Cage movie marathons as well as the chance to catch-up on fan-favorite series like FACE OFF, SUPERNATURAL, and THE LIBRARIANS.

In keeping with tradition, the TARDIS tops the SPACE-MAS tree with the much anticipated premiere of the 2015 DOCTOR WHO Christmas special, THE HUSBANDS OF RIVER SONG. Premiering at 9 p.m. ET on Christmas Day, this year’s special reunites the Doctor (Peter Capaldi, THE THICK OF IT) with – “spoilers!” – his wife, River Song (Alex Kingston, ER) and marks the first time Capaldi’s Doctor and Kingston will share the screen together in these iconic roles. The 75 minute special also features guest appearances from LITTLE BRITIAN’s Matt Lucas and MAN DOWN’s Greg Davies. Leading up to the premiere, Space gets viewers in the Christmas special spirit with the CHRISTMAS WITH THE DOCTOR MARATHON. Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 23 at 8 a.m. ET, the marathon features all past DOCTOR WHO Christmas specials, a selection of past episodes, the 2013 docu-drama AN ADVENTURE IN TIME AND SPACE, and all the episodes of Seasons 8 and 9.

At the time of writing BBC America have yet to confirm when they will air the special, but it will almost certainly be at the same time as SPACE.

The Underwater Menace: North American Release Update

At the time BBC Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video, the North American distrubutor for Doctor Who, hadn't confirmed a release date. Tvshowsondvd.com is now reporting that Amazon.com has updated The Underwater Menace page to show a March 1, 2016 release. No official confirmation has been received from the BBC or Warner Home Video so all release dates will be considered tentative.

Underwater Menace gets North American Release

The Underwater Menace (Credit: BBC) North American Doctor Who fans may be able to purchase The Underwater Menace in the new year.

 Tvshowsondvd.com has reported that it will be on sale January 19, 2016. The BBC has not yet confirmed the date. No cover art or special features for the R1 version have been announced yet.

The R2 version of The Underwater Menace was released October 26 2015. It featured previously missing episode two whose recovery was announced in December 2011, the extant episode three as well as reconstructions of episode one and four.

Series 9 Ratings Update From Space

DOCTOR WHO remains the most watched program on Space with an average of 731,000 viewers. It is also the #1 program on Canadian entertainment specialty television this broadcast year to date for total viewers and the key demos of 25-54, 18-49 and 18-34. Season 9 is also the most-watched season of the series to date in the key demos of A25-54 and A18-49, with 421,000 and 416,000 viewers respectively.
Space has been airing the modern series of Doctor Who since Planet of the Dead in 2009.

Canadian broadcaster SPACE celebrates the return of Doctor Who this weekend with a special message from Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman:


The premiere of The Magician's Apprentice will be preceded by a number of Doctor Who episodes, plus a special edition of their regular magazine InnerSpace.

TORONTO (September 16, 2015) – Space’s highest-rated series in the history of time returns with all-new episodes when Season 9 of DOCTOR WHO premieres this Saturday, Sept. 19 at 9 p.m. ET. Peter Capaldi returns as the Doctor alongside Jenna Coleman and guests including GAME OF THRONES’ Maisie Williams. Now that the Doctor and Clara have established a dynamic as a partnership of equals, they’re relishing the fun and thrills that all of space and time has to offer. Tangling with ghosts, Vikings, and the ultimate evil of the Daleks, they embark on their biggest adventures yet. Missy (Michelle Gomez, BAD EDUCATION) is back to plague the Doctor once more, the Zygons inspire fear as they shape-shift into human clones, and a new arrival moves in cosmic ways.

Last Christmas tops SPACE

Santa Claus (NICK FROST) (Credit: BBC / David Venni)SPACE have reported that the Christmas Special Last Christmas not only ranked as the channel's most popular show over Christmas, but also the highest ranked programme on the channel so far this broadcast year.
Space audiences skyrocketed this past December – the most-watched month in the channel’s history – making it the #1 entertainment specialty channel for the key A25-54 and A18-49 demos. Drawing in an average audience of 101,000 total viewers, December 2014 saw Space’s key A25-54 demo rise 37% and jump four spots to #1. A major contributor to Space’s record-breaking month is its signature series DOCTOR WHO and the premiere of the 2014 Christmas special LAST CHRISTMAS, which drew an average audience of 792,000 viewers, making it the top broadcast on Space this broadcast year-to-date.

Other key December audience boosters were Space’s Magical Merry Marathon which featured HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN on December 27 and HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS on December 28, pulling in 510,000 and 746,000 viewers, respectively. On December 28, Space’s exclusive series THE LIBRARIANS, currently airing at Sundays at 8 p.m. ET, pulled in a series-high 675,000 viewers, making it the #2 entertainment specialty program. THE HUNGER GAMES, which aired as part of Space’s Super Team Marathon, delivered an average audience of 526,000 viewers December 29.

Doctor Who to Headline Bell Media’s 'Project Latte'

Canadian company Bell Media revealed today that its upcoming subscription on-demand video streaming service, code-named “Project Latte,” will give users in Canada access to 108 episodes of Doctor Who.

Project Latte, which launches next month, is aiming to be Canada’s premium subscription on-demand video streaming service, providing the most robust lineup of superior television content in the country. Project Latte will feature more than 10,000 hours of premium non-kids TV programming, with more than 350 unique TV titles. Designed to complement traditional television and available to all TV providers, to date Project Latte will be offered via set-top box to TELUS Optik TV, Bell Fibe TV, and Bell Aliant FibreOP TV subscribers at launch. The service will also be available via mobile apps, the web, game consoles, and smart TVs.

Doctor Who, which is the Number 1 series of all time on Canadian channel Space, reached new hights in the recently concluded eighth season, averaging 756,000 viewers weekly, making it the most-watched TV series on Canadian speciality television during its run.
